- Printed by Latimer Trend & Company, Ltd., Plymouth. First edition. 'With decorations by Richard Shirley-Smith' consisting of ten wood engravings [Bain nos. 44-53] used in various combinations on dust jacket, title page, and chapter heads. Bound in orange book cloth with dust jacket. This set of engravings would be reprinted in a limited edition in 1985, see entry no. 116. Faber and Faber was the first commercial publisher fully to exploit the illustrative potential of Shirley Smith's wood engravings, as demonstrated by Bartrúm's Gourmet's Garden [entry no. 52] and Clark's The Darkening Green [entry no. 54].
