Scope and Content:
The drawing depicts Forbes's ship approaching Porto Sancto. Top of page: "One of the Insulae Purpurariae." Bottom of page: a passage beginning "Our native soil now far behind, we ply the lonely waste of seas and boundless sky," a paraphrase of a translation of the Portuguses epic poem, "The Lusiads," by Luís Vaz de Camões (c. 1524-1580), available in a popular English translation in 1776.
