- The image shows a branch of a cotton plant, with some flowers blossoming, others closed, and others open and full of cottom. The Latin name is given as Gossypium (see genus Gossypium). Bottom of page: a quotatio from Erasmus Darwin's "The Botanic Garden," beginning, "The Nymph, Gossypia, treads the velvet sod."
