- The English painter and engraver Colin Sealy (1891-1964) was born in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, and spent part of his early life in Ceylon. After studying at the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1920s, Sealy taught life drawing at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. His work was influenced by Cubism and abstraction, and he was a member of the Seven and Five Society from 1924 to 1927. From the mid-1910s to the mid-1950s, he was married to the painter Doris Vaughan (1894-1975), a notable Colourist and follower of Christopher Wood. The couple had a studio in St. Ives, Cornwall, and later in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. In 1977, Belgrave Gallery held a joint exhibition of the paintings of Sealy and Vaughan. See:
The department has made printed impressions of six of the completed blocks. These prints accompany the collection.
Collection of eight wood blocks engraved by Colin Sealy, circa 1924. The blocks vary in size from 120 x 150 mm to 75 x 48 mm, and do not appear to represent a unified series of designs. There is no record that they were ever published. One of the blocks is almost completely unworked, save for some preliminary sketching. The seven remaining blocks all appear finished, and were previously inked for printing. All lack titles, and only one is signed (on the reverse: "C. Sealy, 1924"). In 1924, Sealy was teaching life drawing at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and was a new member of the Seven and Five Society.
The seven completed blocks depict (from largest to smallest): a man chopping wood in a forest; two cats sleeping; a man playing guitar; a scene of lush vegetation; a large modern house; a smaller unidentifiable building, in the countryside; and a country church. - Subject Terms:
