Manuscript diary and record of expenditure kept by an unidentified British military officer, in 1854 and 1855. It records such items as the sharpening of his sword, dismissal of the morning parade on the cricket ground, sword drills, and the commanding of battalions. Most of the entries are brief and reference is made to “Newbolt & self” and also returning to Bury. The diarist was also a cricket player for Bury St. Edmunds, and records “number of runs season of 1855, first name denotes where played.” Inserted into a front pocket are several notes which record the diarist's arrival at Cape Horn in 1859; a Tea Fight in Bury St Edmunds; the removal of his trousers (while asleep) by a maid; and officers and the maid arriving to arrest him in his night-shirt.
