The album depicts several generations of the Lendrum and Munro families. It includes a wide range of photos, consisting chiefly of individual portraits and informal group photos, though there are a considerable number of large group photos (of a school class, for example) and photos of particular buildings and places. Very few of the pictures are dated; some that are date to the 1930s, though, given the individuals shown, many others must date to the first decades of the twentieth century. Some are professional portraits, while others are more casual images likely taken by one of the family.
The primary subject of the album is Ronald Lendrum (1900-1978), who, in 1930, married Moira Munro (1897-1978), daughter of Neil Munro (1863-1930), Scottish author and journalist. There are a large number of portraits of Lendrum, or "Ron," and a fair number of images of Moira as a child as well. At the time when he and Moira met, Ron worked in medicine. Ron's parents, Robert and Anna Lendrum, are shown in several images, as are numerous other family members and young children, especially Ron and Moira's daughters, Lesley and Finella.
Individuals depicted are mainly from the Lendrum family, and are labeled in pen by first name, with occasional additions in graphite. There are also several birthday cards with images of children alongside printed text. Many of the photographs are set in gardens and the outdoors, with figures on picnics, reclining on lawns, and playing various sports. The album also includes several clippings from newspapers--photos and cartoons--and one sketch of Finella by Lesley.
Neil Munro appears in several photographs, at the beach, in his war correspondent uniform, taking a drink, and in front of "Doom Castle." Other family members depicted include Hugh Munro (1893-1915), a son of Neil Munro, who served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during World War One. Photos show him in uniform, his unit marching in through town and, later, soldiers accompanying his coffin to burial. Hugh died attempting to capture a boobytrapped German flag from a stretch of barricades, in Loos.
It is unclear who assembled the photo album, but, given the frequency of members of the Lendrum family, and its emphasis on Ron Lendrum, possibilities include Ron's children, such as Lesley, who compiled a biography of Neil Munro, or his wife, Moira. The latter possibility would be supported by pen inscriptions appearing to label Neil Munro as "father."
