Notes:
Walter Thomas Moses, son of Mary and Thomas Moses (a shipbuilder), was christened on July 29, 1862, in Westbere, Kent. According to census records, he later resided at 27 Cannonbury Place (or Road), where he was a ship builder (1881), smack owner (1891), carrier, carman employer (1901), and fish salesman (1911).
Sketchbook kept by Walter Thomas Moses, a student at Kemp's Hall (in Ashford, Kent), circa 1875. All drawings are in graphite; some are signed by Moses, and some are captioned. With a title leaf in pen and black ink over graphite.
Three of the first four drawings prominently depict a horse, and the first of these is captioned "The Iron Duke." In drawings one and four, the horse is ridden by a man in military uniform. In the second drawing, the horse is posed (rider-less) in front of a domestic brick building, identified in a sign above the door as "Edith Villa." This is the Moses family home in Ramsgate, possibly named after the artist's grandmother, Edith Moses.
The remaining drawings, some of them very simple, include: a caricatured man with pince-nez, posed in front of a bust (of Shakespeare?); small sketches of various wildlife, including deer and birds; a young man, perched on a fence or dock, nodding off while reading; a king in regalia in dramatic pose; "A Scotch Laddie" with bow and arrow; "Chamois Hunters"; and "The Dishonest Peasant."
