- Notes:
- The Haggers were a well-known Quaker family in the Essex/Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire area. Records show a Stephen Hagger married to Hannah, producing 11 children between 1731 and 1747, all being born in either Chishill or Buckland. Stephen apparently died in 1770 in Kingswood, Hertfordshire. Of the 11 children, a Joseph Hagger (probably the author of the present manuscript) marries Hannah (née Neatby); their son Thomas Neatby Hagger was baptised at the Bedford & Hertfordshire Quaker Meeting in 1782.
Bound in contemporary plain paper boards; printed text of "Godfrey's General Cordial" visible on front pasteboard.
Manuscript Book of Discipline, drawn by Joseph Hagger of Chishill, England, in 1773. Like other Quaker Books of Discipline, the text is arranged alphabetically with one letter per page, here elaborately drawn in a Celtic style featuring human figures, animals, birds and mystical beasts. The final page is annotated "Joseph Hagger His Book Chisshill 1773." The book comprises 24 letters on 24 pages (letters J and U are omitted), with the eight letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G & I having the addition of a biblical passage emphasizing a Quaker moral code. The remaining 16 pages have the drawn initial letters awaiting the insertion of the biblical passage at a later date. - Subject Terms:
