- "This edition of Sketches by Boz and other early minor works of Dickens, part of the Nonesuch Dickens designed by Francis Meynell, is limited to 877 copies. The text has been printed in Scotland by R. & R. Clark Ltd., in this specially-cut version of Martin's type; the etchings were pulled by hand from the original plates by A. Alexander & Sons, Ltd., ; the binding is executed by the Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Co., Ltd.; and the paper was made by the Worthy Paper Company Association of West Springfield."--Colophon.
"Of the writings contained in this volume, only 'Sketches by Boz' and 'Master Humphey's Clock' were reprinted during Dickens's lifetime in his collected works. The text of these two is taken from the 'Charles Dickens' Edition, which Dickens himself revised. The headlines written by him for the right-hand pages of that edition are here printed in the margins against relevant passages. 'Sunday under Three Heads,' 'Sketches of Young Couples' and of 'Young Gentlemen,' and the minor articles in Bentley's Miscellany were not added to Dickens's Collected Works until he was dead. Our text of them follows the first editions. Three articles taken from Bentley's Miscellany were reprinted in 1880 under the title of 'The Mudfog Papers,' a name which we have not preserved owing to its late origin. The pieces which Dickens himself did no choose to reprint are distinguished in this edition by being set in a smaller size of type than the rest. The etchings by Cruikshank with which 'Sketches by Boz' are illustrated in this edition are, with one exception, those that he made for the issue in Monthly Parts of 1837-1839. Twenty-seven of them are enlarged versions of plates which he etched for the first edition of 1836-1837. The original plates for both large and small versions of these twenty-seven subjects still exist. We have chosen to print from the large plates, which have the advantages of being uniform with those for the thirteen subjects which did not appear in the First Edition, and of being better suited to the size of our page. ... The cover-design of the monthly parts is printed from an electrotype from the original engraving ..."--Page xvii
