Manuscript volume of illustrated lecture notes from a course on zoology and geology, by an unidentified student, probably British. The hand, and the level of sophistication of the subject matter, appear to be that of a secondary school student. The notes are written in a contemporary ruled notebook, variously in black ink or in graphite. The notes are accompanied by numerous illustrations and diagrams, primary in ink, many with added color. There are at least 51 lectures (the last so numbered begins on page [124]). The first lecture is captioned: "Zoology and geology, notes taken on, lectures on ... May 2nd 1870 ..."
Among numerous lecture topics are notes on: classification of the animal kingdom (p. 10); Protozoa (p. 13); sponges (p. 17); the spontaneous generation theory (p. 20); aqueous rocks (p. 25); Hydrozoa (p. 31); Echinozoa (p. 39); orders of Anelida (p. 49); Anthropoda (p. 53); Arachnida (p. 59); the function of nutrition (p. 63); insects (p. 69); Mollusca (p. 77); Brachiopoda (p. 82); gastropods (p. 88); Opercula (p. 91); Pleropoda (p. 97); cuttle fishes (p. 103); geological disribution (p. 109); vertebrates (p. 111); Branchiata (p. 117); fins (p. 124); Amphibia (p. 133); Reptilia (p. 136); birds (p. 139); and Mammalia (p. 143).
Among the drawings are depictions of a horse (p. 8); coral reef (p. 36-37); Annelida (p. 49); a lobster, mygalomorph, and grasshopper (p. 52); a lion (p. 64); a mollusk (p. 77); a snail (p. 90); a cephalopod (p. 100); a human skeleton (p. 110); newts and various fish (p. 122-123); and a rattlesnake (p. 131). On p. 154 there is a quick sketch of a man's head in profile, with which is written the words "P. Kelly."; it is unclear if this identifies the creator of the manuscript.
Some of the drawings are humorously modified, perhaps by the original artist. For example, the lion (p. 64) has been anthropomorphized and given a smoking pipe; likewise, with the rattlesnake on p. 131. An ambiguous pinniped on p. 144 wears a top hat. - Subject Terms:
