Wood watercolor box, manufactured by Reeves & Sons, London, in the late 19th century. The box is intact, with original brass hinges and latch; the original key is lacking. The underside of the lid bears the manufacturer's illustrated label, with the words "Superior water colors" and an image of Britannia (logo of Reeves & Sons) among floral patterns.
The box includes a single compartment. The top half of the fixed wooden tray includes slots for 24 watercolor cakes, in three rows. Printed bands below each row provide the names of the pigments included: Prussian Blue, Crimson Lake, Green Bice, Light Red, Pale Chrome, Sepia, Orange, Raw Umber, Ultramarine, Vermillion, Light Blue, Burnt Sienna, Carnation, Yellow Ochre, Vandyke Brown, Green Verditer, Emerald Green, White, Deep Chrome, Black, Red Lead, Burnt Umber, Indigo, Roman Ochre. Some of the cakes show evidence of moderate use.
Beneath the watercolor cakes are five ceramic mixing saucers. The frontmost compartment is intended for brushes. Preserved here are three brushes, of varying sizes. One brush is broken, the head entirely lacking. - Subject Terms:
