"Winsor & Newton, although founded slightly later than Newman, Reeves, Roberson and Rowney, grew to be the most substantial firm of artists' suppliers. It set up in Rathbone Place, off Oxford St, in close competition with several neighbouring firms of artists' suppliers, but conveniently situated for the many artists with studios in the area ... Winsor & Newton became a limited company in 1882."--British artists' suppliers, 1650-1950.
Restricted fragile material. Use requires permission of the Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts.
Mahogany watercolor box, manufactured by Winsor & Newton, London, in the late 19th century. The box is intact, with original brass hinges, latch, and key.The underside of the lid bears the manufacturer's illustrated label, printed in gold on dark maroon paper. The box includes a primary compartment under the hinged lid, and a second compartment in a slender drawer fitted at the bottom of the box.
The primary compartment includes a tray with slots for 18 watercolor cakes, in three rows. Printed bands below each row provide the names of the pigments included: Aureolin, Cadmium Orange, Yellow Ochre, Roman Ochre, Brown Madder, Burnt Sienna, Vermillion, Venetian Red, Rose Madder, Sepia, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Viridian, Terre Verte, Warm Sepia, Raw Umber, Ivory Black, and Chinese White. In the present specimen, only 11 watercolor cakes are present: Aureolin, Roman Ochre, Brown Madder, Burnt Sienna, Cobalt, Ivory Black, Viridian, Terre Verte, Sepia, Raw Umber, and Chinese White. The cakes present show evidence of minor use.
The remaining portion of the top compartment includes eight brushes of various sizes, most with sable bristles, manufactured by Reeves, Winsor & Newton, Rowney and Daler; all show evidence of use. Also present is a tube of Chinese White, manufactured by Rowney.
The bottom drawer includes a white ceramic palette, 9 x 13 cm, with hole for handling; it bears the stamp of Winsor & Newton. Also present are eight small sheets of a parchment-like material, one of which bears a watercolor of a woman's face, hair, and neck.
