- Reeves & Sons were major British artists' suppliers of the 19th and 20th centuries. They were active at 150 Cheapside, London, from 1829 to 1845.

Wood watercolor box, manufactured by Reeves & Sons, London, between 1829 and 1837. The box includes its original brass hinges, drawer pull, lock, and key. A large engraved label on the underside of the box lid reads: "Reeves & Sons, colour manufacturers, lead pencil makers and ornamental stationers, to His Majesty and the Honorable East India Company. 150 Cheapside, London, removed from Holborn Bridge."
The primary compartment of the box is divided into sections for watercolor cakes, mixing dishes, brushes, and other artists' materials. There are 12 slots for watercolor cakes, in two rows. Printed bands below each row provide the names of the pigments included: Prussian Blue, Gamboge, Lake, Sap Green, Light Red, Bistre, Indigo, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, and Burnt Umber. Cakes show evidence of minimal use.
Also in the primary compartment are: two pens; one brush; a black ink stink bearing Chinese characters; and a marble block with four wells for mixing colors. In the shallow drawer at the bottom of the box are six ceramic mixing dishes, snugly fit to slots designed to hold them.
Two additional printed labels are affixed to portions of the main compartment. One advertises "pencils of different degrees of hardness" manufactured by Reeves & Sons. The other warns of "spurious imitations and base forgeries" of Reeves watercolors. - Subject Terms:
