The census of 1851 records an Ann Salter, aged 20, born in Alton, employed alongside her father, Thomas, in a paper mill in High Wycombe. If the same Ann Salter was the creator of the present sampler, then the item was probably created in the early 1840s.
Embroidered map on linen depicting the British Isles, by Ann Salter, of Alton (Hampshire?). Given the title of the sampler, "The United Kingdom," and the area depicted, it was presumably created after the establishment of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. The border of Ireland is embroidered in red silk; Scotland in pale green; England and Wales in a darker green. Major rivers are delineated in black, along with the names of major cities and towns throughout the United Kingdom. Salter frames the mapped image within traditional cartographic neat lines (also embroidered), marked with degrees of latitude and longitude. The title is within a simple oval border at bottom left.
