- "The prodigious undertaking placed a severe strain on the rudimentary facilities of the Reading establishment and probably necessitated the cutting of corners to save time. The plate is a mounted photograph (calotype) by W.H.F. Talbot. The images vary among copies (subscriptions to Art union numbered about 7000). At least 13 different images were employed, including some which also appeared in Talbot's The pencil of nature and Sun pictures in Scotland.
The mounted photograph sometimes has a letterpress caption pasted beneath, and/or a letterpress label pasted on the reverse: "Patent Talbotype or sun pictures". Labels are known with added text: "A great variety of specimens on sale at Messrs. Brooks (Brothers), 87, New Bond Street, London."

The photograph in copy 1, bound at the end of the volume, depicts a detail of the tower of Orléans Cathedral.
