- Notes:
- Album of 20 albumen prints depicting Ely Cathedral, by an unidentified photographer. The photographs include nine exterior views of the cathedral from varied angles -- including one taken along the River Great Ouse. Eleven interior views depict the cathedral's nave, choir, altar, carvings, screens, and other details. All photographs are unlabeled and unsigned, each about 28 x 22 cm (several are oval in shape, 30 x 24 cm).
The album includes calligraphic dedication and title leaves, drawn in ink, with gray wash and gouache. The dedication reads: "FEP. To Mrs. Peacock, the offering of Ladies of the City of Ely, whose cordial wishes for her happiness will ever attend her." Frances Elizabeth Peacock (née Selwyn) was the widow of George Peacock (1791-1858), Cambridge mathematician and cleric who was Dean of Ely Cathedral from 1839 until his death in 1858. Frances Elizabeth married William Hepworth Thompson in 1866; the album was presumably presented to her on the occasion of her second marriage.
The title leaf is signed "Hills & Son, Ely." In advertisements that accompany their 1864 publication, Hand-book to the Cathedral Church of Ely, T.A. Hills & Son announce the availability of "photographic views of various sizes" depicting the cathedral. - Subject Terms:
