- The collection comprises: [1] a manuscript register, in multiple hands, of 144 criminal offenders in or around Nottingham, England, presumably compiled by the local police or jail administrator, circa 1879-1921; [2] a wooden box, featuring a naive inlay design of a sailing ship; [3] a set of seven prison keys; [4] a framed albumen print of "St. John Street Prison" in Nottingham. A fuller description of the manuscript register is provided in a separate record (see link herewith).
The wooden box -- perhaps made by an inmate of the prison -- contains a single compartment. The box lid, attached with brass hinges, bears a prominent and naive inlay design of a large sailing vessel with three masts, flying a Union Flag at aft. The work is unsigned.
The seven lever lock keys range in length from 7 cm to 10 cm. The largest is labelled "Cells." Two are labelled "Charge Room" and two others "Master Key." Four of the keys bear the name of the manufacturer, Charles Smith & Sons, a firm active under that name at Birmingham from 1867 to 1940.
The mount of the photograph is titled "St. John Street Prison" in black ink. It depicts an exterior facade of the House of Correction. - Subject Terms:
