"There are two versions of the catalogue: One has just 67 lots and lacks a picture by Barocci that appears in the other version of the catalogue as lot 59. The second and probably later version has 68 lots ..."--Getty Provenance Index databases.
"The name "Littlehales" is inscribed on the cover of the auctioneer's (CL) copy of the catalogue, which led Lugt ... to list him as the owner, but this is contradicted by the names of the sellers placed next to each lot in the CL catalogue. ... However, a few of the lots from Rome were bought in by him, and if he was indeed involved in the sale, he must have been associated with the Rome consignment. It can be demonstrated that the pictures in this group in fact belonged to the artist/dealers Robert Fagan and Charles Grignion, both of whom were in Italy at this time and actively exporting paintings to London for resale. ... Grignion is known to have been living in Leghorn in 1802 at the home of a certain "Giuseppe Littledale," and this is perhaps the source of the name "Littlehales." In any case, the paintings were certainly the property of Fagan and Grignion ..."--Getty Provenance Index databases.
