- In "Patent Self Binder" (no. 15868) made by Priestley & Swann, Ltd., Nottingham. The firm of Priestly & Swann was active from ca. 1895 until well into the 20th century.
Sample book of machine lace containing 456 registered lace patterns, neatly contained in a purpose-made album, the front cover of which is stamped "Novelty Laces" above the initials "E.F.N." The letter 'N' appears on a second line; it may refer to Nottingham. If the merchant's initials are thus "E.F." the maker may be a member of the Fewkes family, a number of whom were active in silk manufacture in Nottingham. Kelly's directories of 1904 and 1928 list an Ernest Fewkes, lace manufacturer, at Nottingham.
Samples generally represent middle-to-high quality machine lace work, for use in fashion edgings, including lingerie. Some of the samples are chemical lace, and some are made with a Leavers machine. The work includes imitations of bobbin lace (including Torchon lace), needle lace, and filet lace.
All samples are accompanied by a label bearing the registration number (completed in graphite). Some of the samples are marked "Sold Out" in manuscript. All but five of the samples are white lace, the only exceptions being one small black sample perhaps for mourning clothes, and four large samples which are each sewn onto a swatch of silk, in black, pink, ivory on yellow silk, and multi-colored ivory, rose and green. Samples vary from ornate to simple, for all audiences and applications, including nettings embellished with floral patterns, some pleated designs with ripples, others with dots, checkers, webs, diamonds, simple weaves, and one with a satin ribbon woven through.
Most samples are on leaves of blue and white paper that have been tipped on to the brown leaves of the present album. These leaves may have formerly belonged to a different album. - Subject Terms:
