- Luis Riquelme was an officer for Bourbon Spain during the Peninsular War. The present passport granted the two British travelers safe passage to Madrid and San Sebastian near the conclusion of the war, at which time the Napoleonic armies were in retreat in the Pyrenees.
"No. [1698]. Don Luis Riquelme y Ribera, Brigadier de los Exércitos Nacionales, Coronel del Regimiento Infantería de Baylen, Gobernador Miltar interino de esta Plaza, y Subdelgado de Rentas de la misma, por la Regencia de las Españas. Concedo libre y seguro Pasaporte á [Dn. Mateo Arnold y Dn. Juan Keir (?), ambos en el Servicio de S.M.B. que pasan a la Villa y Corte de Madrid, y desde alli a San Sevastian, les accompaña un Criado Aristomo (?).] Por tanto mando á los Gefes Militares, Justicias y demas autoridades sujetas á mi jurisdiccion, y á las que no lo son pido y encargo no le pongan impedimento alguno en su viage; antes bien le den el auxîlio que necesitare: las raciones de [blank] por su recibo, tomando razon de este Pasaporte; el [Alojamiento] pagándolos á los precios arreglados por S.M. y demas prevenido en sus Reales Ordenanzas, por convenir á su Real Servicio. Dado en Alicante á [14. de Diciembre] de mil ochocientos trece. Riquelme [signature]."
