Notes:
The Adult Orphan Institution was established in 1820, "for the relief and education of the friendless and unprovided orphan daughters of clergymen of the established Church, and of military and naval officers." Its regulations state: "That the education of the wards consist of sound and useful knowledge, together with such accomplishments as may qualify them to become governesses or teachers ..." Wards were admitted between the ages of 14 and 17. The institution operated at Someries House (a building designed by John Nash), adjacent to Regent's Park, London. See: An account of the Adult Orphan Institution (London: J. Jesse, 1831).
The 16 drawings include views of cottages, ruins, mill streams, castles and other subjects, on cream or grey paper, all but two signed and dated, 1831. All are annotated on the reverse "Adult Institution" or "Adult Orphan Institution" alongside the name of the artist. One is also signed and inscribed "For Her Royal Highness The Princess Augusta, H.S. Stephens, 8th Nov 1831." The names of the remaining artists are: Lydia Charlotte Back, Anna Maria Bishop, Martha Ann Gibbon, Eleanor Dehane, Sarah Ann Hildyard, Gertrude Keily, Mary Haworth Knox, Eloise Mascall, Jane Elizabeth Morgan, Mary Rebekah Savory, Margaret Smith, Amelia Webb, and Eliza Wilson. All, except H.S. Stephens, are listed as wards of the Adult Orphan Institution on page 31 of: An account of the Adult Orphan Institution (London: J. Jesse, 1831). In this listing, the ages of the artists range from 18 to 21.
