- "This indenture witnesseth that [William Roberts, the son of Ann Roberts of Melton Mowbray ...] doth put h[im]self apprentice to [John Higgins of Melton Mowbray, aforesaid staymaker] to learn h[is] art, and with h[im] after the manner of an apprentice to serve from the [twenty fifth day of December which was in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty [sic?] unto the full end and] term of [seven] years ... And the said [John Higgins in consideration of the sum of ten pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain ... paid by the said Ann Roberts the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged] the said apprentice in the art [or mistery (?) of a staymaker] which he now useth shall teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed the best way and manner that he can finding and allowing unto h[is] said apprentice sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging and all other necessaries during the term [apparel excepted which the said Ann Roberts is to find and allow during the said term] ... In witness whereof, the parties above named to these indentures interchangeably have set their hands and seals the [fourth] day of [February] in the [twenty fifth] year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord [George the Second] ... in the year of our Lord 17[52]."
The signature of "Jno. Higgins" appears next to a red wax seal. Also signed at bottom: "Sealed and delivered (being first duely stamped) in the presence of us, John Smith son, John Smith jun."
The left margin includes three blind-embossed "VI Pence" tax stamps.
