Collection of 62 cut-paper butterflies, pinned out in a glass-top wooden entomological box.
"My entomological collections contain collections of butterflies and moths, hand-cut from paper ephemera and held together with bookbinder's pamphlet stitch. There is usually a quirky link between the paper material used for the butterfly and its common name. Hence the High Brown Fritillary is cut from the dun [grayish-brown] contours of a map of the Cheviot Hills [that straddle the border between Northumberland and the Scottish Borders]. The names are hand-written in brown ink on tiny scientific labels. Butterflies are amongst the first indicators of environmental change, [and] I want these collections to highlight their frailty and diversity, as an alternative to a collection of actual specimens."--Artist's statement.
