The hand-drawn designs are primarily in graphite, some traced over in ink, and some with the addition of watercolor. Likely made for personal, at-home embroidery use. Designs feature especially butas (teardrop shapes common to Paisley patterns), vegetal motifs, and floral motifs (some of which may have been appropriate to eyelet lace). Other designs include Orientalist patterns and buildings, such as fanciful pagoda and stupa-style structures, and stylized letters of the alphabet for monograms. The abundance of Paisley patterns suggests a date around the middle of the nineteenth century, when the popularity of embroidered and woven Paisley shawls for women in Britain was at its height.
Leaf 11 features a drawings of a church door, including a portion of the wall of the building made of stone blocks. Leaf 34 features a vivid watercolor of an urn decorated with fanciful Mediterranean- or Orientalist-inspired designs. - Subject Terms:
