- William Henry Burgess (circa 1792-1844) was landscape painter to William IV and the teacher of John Leech and Thackeray.
In contemporary quarter roan.
The drawings by Burgess depict rural and pastoral scenes -- subjects frequently found in the artist's work -- including trees, stone bridges, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, small sailboats, churches, castles, ruins, and Tudor-style buildings. Most are unsigned and undated, but three have the signature H.W. Burgess in the lower margin and are dated 1827 and 1830. None is titled. All drawings are executed in graphite. Some of the drawings would have been suitable for Burgess's Eidodendron (1827) or his Studies of trees (1828), both published by J. Dickinson.
