The title is written in pen and black ink, probably in Daniell's hand, on a preliminary leaf.
BAC: British Art Center copy has armorial bookplate of John Rushout, Baron Northwick.
Comprises 157 soft-ground etchings, of which 156 are proofs before letters, with the names of the majority of the subjects pencilled in by William Daniell. Of these portraits, 72 were published in two volumes with the title: A collection of portraits sketched from the life since the year 1793 (London : Printed by William Matthew Thiselton ... for Messres. Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme ... and Mr. William Daniell ..., 1809-1814). The two-volume publication included short biographies of each of the subjects; the present work lacks any letterpress material.
The original drawings for many of these portraits are in the collections of the British Museum, which also has a bound set of proofs containing 150 plates.
