Slides are hand-colored lantern slides, in wooden box, 21 x 27 x 12 cm. (as issued?).
Smith climbed Mont Blanc in 1851. He produced a entertaining show on the subject and gave his illustrated lecture many times in London's Egyptian Hall between 1852-1858.--cf. Altick, R. Shows of London, p. 475-478.
The slides illustrate the ascent; one shows Smith at the podium giving his lecture. Presumably these slides were produced to capitalize on the popularity of the show; "'The Ascent of Mont Blanc' was one of the biggest hits of the whole Victorian era" (Altick, p. 475).
