Preliminary matter, including added engraved t.p., printed on double leaves. Royal arms of Louis XIII of France and Navarre engraved on letterpress t.p.; engraved portraits of Louis XIII and of the author included in preliminary matter.
Designed to be bound with the leaves either folded (in which case the plates and preliminaries are double leaves, and the text is paginated) or unfolded (in which case the plates and preliminaries are on single leaves, and the text is in numbered double columns).
Wood engraved head- and tail-pieces and initials throughout. Printed marginalia.

The final section of the work includes detailed instruction in jousting.
BAC: British Art Center copy bound with leaves unfolded. Has added to it 50 plates from the 1629 edition of the work, published under the title "L'instruction du roy en l'exercice de monter à cheval". These include the added engraved t.p. dated 1629 and the engraved portrait of Roger de Bellegarde which originally appeared in the 1625 edition. The plates of 1629 have engraved names and titles of the people depicted added, as well as other alterations. They are bound facing the corresponding plates from the 1623 edition so that the two may be easily compared. The plates from the 1623 edition have names and titles of the people depicted added in ms in brown ink. Bound in gilt-tooled brown morocco by Rivière and Son. From the Dyson Perrins Collection.
