- A chromolithographed poster for the production of the comic opera "Dorothy" (music by Alfred Cellier, libretto by B.C. Stephenson), Theatre Royal, Bath, c. 1886. At head of sheet "Theatre Royal, Bath commencing Monday, October 7th. Six nights and matinee". The poster depicts scenes from the play. "Dorothy" was one of the most popular London musicals of the 19th century. Set in 18th-century rural Kent during hop-picking season, the plot involves a Squire's daughter (the eponymous "Dorothy"); Geoffrey, the handsome "young English gentleman"; his friend Harry; and Lurcher, a Sheriff's officer. There is a burglary, Lurcher dines "too well", identities are mistaken and then exposed, and the end is obvious and happy. "Dorothy" opened at London's Gaiety Theatre in September of 1886 and moved to the Theatre Royal, Bath, and other provincial theaters shortly thereafter. It opened on Broadway in November of 1887 and was a success there as well.
