- Notes:
- The journal records Pulleine's travels in Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. The pocket in the inner front board contains his passport, visa, hotel bills and some other receipts with a carte-de-visite for the Hotel du Faucon, Berne. On Sept. 10th, he got his passport and visa and left England on the 12th with friends by the Soho Steamer from Tower Stairs for Antwerp. From Antwerp they travel to Brussels, Liege, Cologne, Coblenz, Frankfort, Manheim, the Rhine, Interlaken, Geneva & Berne. In the 1861 Census, James Pulleine of Carlton Hall, Crakehall, near Bedale in North Yorkshire, is recorded as a "landed proprieter and barrister-at-law" aged 50. His wife Annie (49), daughter Georgina (15), Swiss governess Marie (32) and the household staff of eleven. This trip was made when James was 29 and seems to pre-date his marriage, their daughter being born six years later. The Pulleine family purchased the manor of Crakehall in 1810, and Georgina, their only child, married Sir John Colwell.
