- The barrister Frederick John Staples-Browne was born 1 Nov. 1844. On 25 April 1867 he married Mary Jane Molineux, with whom he latterly resided at Brashfield House, near Bicester, Oxfordshire.

Scrapbook of printed and manuscript material relating to the amateur concerts and theatrical performances of Frederick John Staples-Browne. The material, which dates from 1863 to 1895, includes programs in print and manuscript, printed newspaper reviews of the productions, and letters of thanks addressed to Staples-Browne. The early material concerns shows given in Bicester and the greater Oxfordshire region. From 1882 to 1888, there are a number of programs (many printed in primitive lithography) for concerts given at the West Malvern Institute Working Men's Club. From 1888 to the end of the album, Bampton is the primary locale for performances. Manuscript annotations record information such as the names of performers, titles of encores, and changes in program. Longer annotations, written beneath the programs, sometimes record the reasons for a performance. The album lacks illustrative material, except the program for an 1878 production of Alfred Dever's Squire of Turniptop Hall, with Staples-Browne in the title role, in which is laid a pen-and-ink sketch of the Squire, perhaps a portrait of Mr. Staples-Browne.
The programs and clippings note Staples-Browne's frequent solo performances of popular song. He participates in (and organizes) several performing groups, including The Ohio Minstrels, The Magicians Amateur Dramatic Club, and The Bampton Amateur Dramatic Club. Many of the entertainments are for benefit of various charities, including the Launton Working Men's Institute, the Bicester Union Poorhouse, and the Radcliffe Infirmary; several later performances are for the aide of the Bampton Cricket Club. - Subject Terms:
