- Collection of about 100 mid-19th century drawings, in graphite, of French, Italian, and English churches, by an unknown artist. All appear to be the work of a professional English architect. The locations of English subjects suggest that the artist may have been a native of the West Country. Most places depicted are named, and some have additional hand-written notes. Many of the more technical drawings include measurements. The dates suggest summer sketching trips. Years of dated items include 1854 (France), 1857 (England), and 1859 (Italy and France). The majority of the sheets measure 25 x 17.5 cm, with a handful of slightly smaller sheets. Drawings include building plans, exterior views, exterior elevations, and details (with some cross-sections) of alters, arches, bell towers, buttresses, candlesticks, capitals, columns, doorways and door knockers, friezes, lecterns, shrines, statues, tombs, and windows.
Drawings in France include architectural details of churches and other buildings in Angers, Auvergne, Bayeux, Bourges, Caen, Chartres, Coutances, the Château de Falaise (a pen and ink view), Le Mans, Nevers, Nice, Orleans, Paris (Louvre), Rouen, and Tours. In Italy: Bergamo, Bologna, Brescia, Brugnato, Civita Castellana, Genoa, Lovere, Milan (including a watercolor of stained glass windows), Monza, Murano, Padua, Pavia, Perugia, Pisa, Torcello, Venice, and Verona. In England: Cheltenham, Entryhill House (near Bath), Glastonbury, London, Peterborough, Salisbury, Wells, Wrington, and Yatton. The pencil drawings conclude with a small number of sketches from Germany (including one in Bacharach and three in Cologne), a single profile portrait of a young man (a self-portrait?), and some unidentified church sketches.
In addition to the graphite drawings, there is a set of 18 landscape watercolor sketches, possibly by the same hand, most of which are unidentified and undated. These include a mix of scenes along the Rhine in Germany (including Burg Rheinfels) and scenes in England and Wales, two of which are dated (1851 and 1853). - Subject Terms:
