- John R. Isaac was an engraver & lithographer. The material in this collection concerns three of his inventions exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851: an oak cabinet for displaying maps, a manifold stand for use as an easel, and an improved ink bottle. Included are his applications, admissions ticket, original pen and ink and watercolor designs, and an advertising leaflet for the ink bottle.

The folder of material concerning the Great Exhibition of 1851 includes a diagram of an exhibition hall; a printed ticket for early admission to the Exhibition on the 13th and 14th of October, issued to Isaac; a printed exhibitor's permit allowing the possesor to remove exhibited articles from the building, issued to Isaac; a newspaper clipping, undated, describing events to take place at the Crystal Palace, with notes in pencil in the margin; a printed ferry ticket "For persons going on board the Great Eastern on business, by the Rock Ferry Steamers"; and a letter, dated 21 April 1851, to Isaac from Alp. Belo [?], who informs Isaac that he has unpacked Isaac's items to be exhibited (a map cabinet, folio stand, and bottles) in the hall.
A folder of material concerning an exhibition of watercolors at Liverpool includes an unsigned 3-page memo, in pen and ink, captioned: "Liverpool exhibition of water color drawings &c." The memo states: "In the provincial exhibitions great injustice is done by exhibiting water color drawings and oil painting in one room and in close proximity ... to remedy this defect ... it is proposed to establish an annual exhibition [at Liverpool] soley of water color drawings and drawing room sculpture." Also present is a letter to Isaac, 3 Feb. 1851, from A. Booth, about this proposed watercolor exhibition, to open immediately after the London Exhibition.
