- Evelyn Adams, of Wynters Grange, Harlow, was the daughter of H. Atherton Adams and Mary Louisa Bulley Adams, who married in 1868.
In pen and ink through 27 Jan., 1889, and then in graphite. Writing in graphite is very faint in places.

Manuscript diary of Evelyn Adams, of Wynters Grange, Harlow. The diary was a gift on 24 May, 1888, from Evelyn's sister Charlotte Amyand Powys Adams, whose marriage to Robert Wilkes Heard is the focus of many of the early diary entries. A long newspaper clipping describing the wedding day is pasted in. Evelyn is clearly very fond of her sister and new brother-in-law, and she makes numerous trips to visit them at their home in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland. Trips to Kinsale and other British Isles destinations are the focus of most of the diary entries, including a trip to London, where she takes in the theater, a trip to Bath, and a long stay in Stirling, where she enjoys the great hospitality of the Normand family and tours Scottish Highlands and castles. In Scotland she notes her enjoyment of tennis, in singles and doubles play. Other sources of enjoyment include frequent dances and her periodic performances on mandolin. In matters of romance, Evelyn writes on 24 Aug., 1889, about an unwanted marriage proposal from an unexpected suitor. From 1891 through 1894, diary entries become infrequent. After 1894, Evelyn writes in the diary only once, after many blank pages, on 30 June, 1925. In this long entry, she expresses sorrow about unnamed hardships, perhaps a failed marriage. Interspersed among Evelyn's journal entries, the diary contains several pages of epigrams, four pressed flowers, a photograph of an unidentified young man, and newspaper clippings concerning the marriage, death, or birth of family members. - Subject Terms:
