Manuscript children's book, in a single hand, with Christmas verse and numerous small engravings pasted in. The first 13 pages of the manuscript contain poems about (and perhaps intended for) members of the Root family, which includes Mr. and Mrs. Root and children John, Milbrough, Edwin, Joseph, and Benjamin. The writing is clearly that of a child: "John Root is fond of telling a fib, as well as anyone not half so big"; "Now for dear old Mill, who sits all day so still, working at her needle, to get the root of all evil ...". The illustrations, mostly wood engravings, are varied buy usually of an instructive nature. Many illustrations, depicting animals and common objects (such as a kite, cake, or drum), may have belonged to an illustrated dictionary, or similar work. Additionally, there are engravings of horses, men in military or period costume, and humorous pictures. About half of the illustrations are hand colored, probably by a child. - Subject Terms:
