- "The extent of the undertaking makes it necessary to form it into three distinct parts or divisions. The first will comprise England and Wales, the Isles of Man, Wight, Jersey, Guernsey, &c. and will consist of fifty-five volumes. The second will comprise Scotland, in thirty-one volumes; and the third will comprise Ireland, in thirty-two volumes ..."--P. [1]. Only the first volume (Kent) was published.
Page [2] is headed "The following form is most respectfully submitted as a means of obtaining the best authority for the leading particulars of each paragraph" and contains blanks for recording information about notable county houses, including their occupants, founders, architecture, art collections, and neighborhoods.
Page [3] includes a subscription form, offering the option of subscribing to either of the three parts outlined on p. [1] (England & Wales, Scotland, or Ireland) or subscribing to any single volume.
BAC: British Art Center copy has title altered in ms., with Kent substituted for Southampton, and first (volume) replacing second. Has signature of John Pelly Atkins, of Halstead Place (in Sevenoaks, Kent), who subscribed to the single (Kent) volume only. The bottom of p. [3-4], which may have contained a subscription receipt form, has been neatly removed. The final blank page is docketed: 421, J.P. Atkins Esq., Halstead Place. British Art Center copy removed from the Kent volume of this work (DA670.K3 G73 1838+ copy 3), which bears the bookplate of the Halstead Place library. - Subject Terms:
