Biographical/Historical:
Henry Perlee Parker specialized in pictures of marine subjects and smugglers and came to be known as "Smuggler" Parker. He was a leading artist in Newcastle in the 1820s and 1830s, a member of the Northumberland Institution, and a co-founder (with T.M. Richardson) of the ill-fated Northern Academy of Arts. He died penniless in Shepherd's Bush in 1873. There was an exhibition of his work at the Laing Art Gallery, 1969-1970.
Scope and Content:
The collection includes two albums containing Parker's own record of the sale of his paintings and prints from his paintings. The first album (dated 1822-1837) contains details of 66 of his paintings and their purchasers, with notes by the artist together with relevant newspaper clippings collected by him. The material is mounted on 36 leaves with 33 of his pictures engraved on 6 leaves. The second album (46 leaves) contains more newspaper clippings collected by the artist about his own pictures. It also serves as a detailed account book of the sale and distribution of prints from his paintings. The back of the volume includes 40 pages of addresses of agents and customers in different parts of the country. There are also a number of drawings in pen and graphite. The albums are accompanied by a working file by Nerys Johnson for the exhibition she organized on Henry Perlee Parker at the Laing Art Gallery, 1969-1970.
