Inscribed in pen and brown-black ink, verso, entire sheet: "We sup'd upon a crab which we |brought from Steephill and went to | Bed - | Tuesday- The Angels family and | ourselves. - went out to fish for |Whitings - but were unsuccessful | we returned about five to dinner | at our House - owing to the | Cooks negligence we did not get | our dinner till almost seven | I paid for Fowls. 0.3.0. greens & | 0.1.0 - shrimps everyday 1.8 | the dinner consisted of venison & |a chicken pie from Rogers. at | Southampton --- after dinner | we walked by moonlight & found it | delightfully pleasant - | Wednesday- | we all set out at nine o clock to | fish at Hurst. Poor Mrs W. and | my dear child were left behind | owing to their fears of the water - | we had a dashing passage. to Hurst | but when we arrived there had | some hauls for fish and were | successful enough to get sufficient for our dinner and some to bring home | I paid .19. the Bill. and .0.10.6 | for the net and mens assistance | we met Captain Terry at Hurst | who invited us to come and see | him --- we saluted him on our return" | [ this line is obscured by the mat]
