Inscribed in pen and red ink, upper right: "656"; in pen and brown ink, upper center: "the bignes of the largest quils"; in pen and brown ink, lower left: "this creature calld the long tailed porcupine is of the | bignes of a common cat and shaped like the Aegiptian Ichnumen it is coverd with quills the longest on the back about 3 inches | long which gradually decrees in length and thicknes toward the belly so as to seeme only lik common stif short hair the brisels | on the tail are short - it has a sort of finn on the inside of the hinder feet which makes me think it an amphibious | creature the fore teeth are like the bevers drawn from the case preserved in Duke richmonds Cabinet | the tail a little to short, it is described by Piso"; in pen and brown ink, lower right: "pr Geo Edwards | May 1738"; inscribed on back in pen and brown ink, center: "This out line is more correct | than that pr contra"; in graphite, center left: "The quills Large on the back Small toward | the belly the tail a little Longer than in the | Drawing"
