Notes:
Richard Keene exhibited at the 1862 London International Photographic Exhibition and regularly contributed (from 1872 to 1893) to the annual exhibitions of the Royal Photographic Society, of which he was a member. Keene was an early exponent of the platinum process developed by William Willis, which was not only more stable than the commonly-used albumen print, but also had a matte finish with a fine range of soft gray tones. He used these to advantage particularly in his architectural and landscape views, which often include subtle cloud effects. His platinotypes were shown by the Society in 1881. Keene was also a member of The Linked Ring with the pseudonym "Master Printer." A member of the Derby Archaeological Society, Keene photographed historical monuments and houses and published several books of platinotypes illustrating parts of Derbyshire. See: Harker, Margaret. The linked ring (1979), p. 155.
