Notes:
Martin Beckman was appointed "chief engineer of all His Majesty's castles forts, blockhouses and other fortifications in England, Wales and Berwick" in 1677. He was the chief engineer for the design of Hull Citadel, in 1681. An initial plan by Bernard De Gomme, also in the YCBA collections (see: Folio C 2010 6f) "seems to lay down broad guide-lines for Beckman, who ultimately produced a more coherent design" (see: Saunders, A. Fortress builder, pages 229-231). Beckman supervised the work of construction in 1682-1683.
