Notes:
"The second issue on card [published by Henry G. Bohn] - my fourth issue overall, necessitated a reprinting of the accompanying text. The letterpress was compressed onto 12pp., the titlepage was undated, and the printer was now identified as J.E. Adlard, the successor firm to C.J. Adlard. Since the J.E. Adlard imprint appears for the first time in 1855, this is the earliest possible date for the second card issue. Besides the different letterpress, this issue is distinguished by being mounted on smooth and glossy card stock, while the first card version is on a rougher stock with a matte finish. The coloring of this issue, in my experience, is the best of all versions, with superb, brilliant coloring, real millionaire's color. The Abbey-Mellon copy, for example, now at the British Art Center, is of this issue. In all, my census located eleven copies of the first-card issue and twelve copies of the second-card issue of the PORTFOLIO."--Reese, page 5.
