In the early 1880s, the Community of the Sisters of the Church established St. Mary's Convalescent Home and Orphanage at Broadstairs. Its first site was at Wrotham Road. In 1887 it moved to a larger purpose-built building, with 300 beds, at 20 Stone Road.
