Notes:
"... traces the history of the medium properly known as xylography. Wood engravings, traditionally small scale, particularized images, are printed from hard woods such as box, engraved on the end grain. Woodcuts, being incised with a knife on the plank, are bolder when the artist is obliged to contend with a wayward grain. During the twentieth century, xylography has emerged as one of the mostexpressive forms of British art, and in this bracing account James Hamilton places its leading exponents within their artistic and social contexts, and demonstrates, with abundant illustrations, the continuing vitality of this ancient medium."
