Notes:
The Gillows' Archive is a collection of some 200 manuscript volumes, cash books, ledgers, estimate sketch books and correspondence, which tell the story of 200 years of English furniture history. Gillows of Lancaster was founded in 1695 and alone of the great 18th century manufacturers, Chippendale, Sheraton etc. rode the vagaries of fashion and survived into the 20th century. In particular they benefited from association with the Wyatts (at both Heaton Hall and Tatton Park) and from John Carr of York. Extensive correspondence with salesmen, along with details of packing and transport completes a remarkably full picture of both a craft and industry at work.
