Paul Brookes became proprietor of the menagerie in 1803, upon the death of his father Joshua Brookes, who had been the proprietor in the 1760s. Paul appears to have operated the menagerie until 1813, when it was sold to William Herring. See: Plumb, C. The Georgian menagerie. London : I.B. Tauris, 2015 (pages 31-33). Paul's brother was the notable anatomist Joshua Brookes (1761-1833), and specimens from the menagerie contributed to Joshua's studies.
