This watercolor was perhaps the view of Rheinstein and Assmannshausen that Callow exhibited with the Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1863. The death of Prince Albert in 1861 inspired Callow to make a trip to Germany two years later to paint the prince’s old haunts. The picturesque castles that studded the Rhine in southern Germany provided Callow with ideal subject matter for exhibition watercolors. In this view at Assmannshausen Callow shows the village to the right overlooked by castle Rheinstein on the left with just a glimpse of castle Reichenstein beyond the curve of the Rhine.
