The courtier and magnate Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (1532/33-1588), was the favorite of Queen Elizabeth from 1559 to 1562. The robes are those of a Knight of the Order of the Garter, to which he was appointed in 1559. He died of malaria in England in 1588. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2005
