Paul Sandby produced numerous views of Windsor Castle in watercolors, gouache, and oils. These were shown in the public exhibitions and proved extremely popular with collectors. In this example, part of a series of Windsor views in gouache from the mid-1760s, Sandby shows St. George's Chapel at Windsor, where Paul Mellon would be baptized in December 1907. As Mr. Mellon remarked, "I have always felt conscious of this singular privilege, as if the ceremony somehow foreshadowed my later addiction to English life and English places."
