Gallery Label:
The striking contrast between the vigorous draftsmanship evident beneath the broad washes in the lower half of this drawing and the delicately controlled washes and brushwork in the mountains and the sky raises questions about the nature and function of this watercolor. It would seem to be neither an on-the-spot study nor an unfinished work meant for exhibition or sale. It is perhaps a working out, for use in another composition, of the effect of a clear twilight sky over the mountains—an atmospheric effect that is beautifully realized.
